Crisis Funding

Has a crisis hit your family pet?  Many times good-hearted owners are simply unable to afford the costs of modern medicine in emergency situations. In the past, most owners had slim options at their disposal.

Owners usually resort to humane euthanasia to relieve suffering, or "veterinarian financing" (which hurts a medical facility when people do not pay their balances), or no treatment at all.

We know a major trauma or medical problem often occurs when you are least prepared to cover the costs. It is a very sad event when owners have to put a pet down because the funds are not there.

Here are some foundations sympathetic to these situations:

bullet

Ashley's Angel Fund (www.ashleyfund.org/) - North Carolina dog owners whose dog has life threatening condition may receive some assistance.

bullet

Zach Memorial fund. This fund is designed to help owners whose dogs have cancer.

Help-A-Pet - (www.help-a-pet.org) 630-986-9504.

bullet

IMOM Inc., - In Memory of Magic offers funding for dogs who face euthanasia if they do not receive immediate care. PO BOX 282, Cheltenham, MD 20623  (866) -230-2164

bullet

Labrador Life Line (www.labradorlifeline.org) - specifically for Labrador retrievers lovers who need assistance for healthcare costs.

Veterinary Pet insurance is another option regarding emergency care.  There is controversy regarding the cost: benefit ratio when it comes to routine preventative care.

What else can you do to prepare for emergency pet care? Perhaps the easiest is create a Pet account with your bank. Fund it with a small portion of your income every month just like any other bill. It should provide sufficient funding to cover most emergencies, or at least blunt the effect that we see all too often - euthanizing or providing little or no care at all for furry companions.
